Vortex-induced vibrations of a cylinder in inelastic shear-thinning and shear-thickening fluids

Vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of a cylinder in Newtonian fluid is model problem fluid–structure interactions and has been studied extensively. In this work, we study the influence shear-thinning shear-thickening fluids on VIV response one-degree-of-freedom flexibly-mounted cylinder. We consider system with mass ratio $m^*=2$ zero structural damping power-law at $Re_0 = 15$ 200$ , respectively, defined based zero-shear-rate viscosity fluids. investigate how amplitude frequency, flow forces, vorticity contours change as reduced velocity, $U^*$ fluid's time constant, $\lambda$ change. When results are compared $Re_0$ enhance oscillations while suppress them. If, however, define characteristic Reynolds number, $Re_{char}$ evaluated shear rate, $\dot {\gamma } U/D$ then constant stays very similar for shear-thinning, Despite similarity, observed far wake different: thinning amplifies generation reduces extent wake, whereas thickening limits extends wake.
